Eating Cured Meats Increases Risk For Leukemia

The results of a new study suggest that children who regularly eat cured meats like bacon and hot dogs may have a heightened risk of leukemia, while vegetables and soy products may help protect against cancer.

Researchers found that among 515 Taiwanese children and teenagers with and without acute leukemia, those who ate cured meats and fish more than once a week had a 74 percent higher risk of leukemia than those who rarely ate these foods.

On the other hand, kids who often ate vegetables and soy products, like tofu, had about half the leukemia risk of their peers who shunned vegetables and soy.

The findings, reported in the online journal BMC Cancer, point to an association between these foods and leukemia risk – but do not prove cause-and-effect.

Migraine Aura “Stuns” Serene Branson’s Grammy Award Coverage

CBS reporter Serene Branson sort of botched her live Grammy Awards coverage due to migraine aura, not stroke. Her doctors at UCLA released her brain scan results and blood work, showing that the most likely cause of her tongue-tied on-air report was migraine aura.

Before Branson was supposed to go on air, she knew something was wrong.

“I knew something wasn’t right as soon as I opened my mouth,” Branson said on the CBS “The Early Show”. “I hadn’t been feeling well a little bit before the live shot. I had a headache, my vision was very blurry. I knew something wasn’t right, but I just thought I was tired. So when I opened my mouth, I thought, ‘this is more than just being tired. Something is terribly wrong.’ I wanted to say, ‘Lady Antebellum swept the Grammys.’ And I could think of the words, but I could not get them coming out properly.”

But what exactly is migraine aura?

A migraine aura is similar to a stroke but it has no lasting neurological damage. However, it is not something one can just take lightly: migraine aura’s symptoms can be an indication of a more serious underlying long-term medical condition. Medical studies even indicate that those who have had migraine auras are more likely to have a stroke in the future.
